About this anagram solver
This anagram solver and word unscrambler has two clearly separated searches over our compiled lexicon. Use every letter finds single-word exact rearrangements: LISTEN can match SILENT, but not LINE. Make shorter words is a words-from-letters rack search, so LINE may match LISTEN because unused letters are allowed. Coverage depends on the selected source scope.
How to use it
- Choose whether every letter must be used or shorter words are allowed.
- Type a set of letters or a scrambled word into the search field.
- In rack mode, optionally add up to three blank letters.
- Results use the documented build-specific ranking heuristic.
Tips
- Keep the default exact mode for a conventional anagram; choose rack mode when letters may be left unused.
- Classic anagram pairs include LISTEN/SILENT, EARTH/HEART, and ALERT/LATER.
- Repeated letters are counted: a rack with one E cannot make a word that needs two Es unless a blank supplies the second.
- Include broader source-list matches when the puzzle uses a different or wider lexicon.
- The exclude field removes results containing any of the specified letters.
Exact anagrams and rack words use different rules
Exact mode compares letter multisets: both the letters and their quantities must agree. STATE and TASTE each contain two Ts plus one A, S, and E, so they share an anagram signature. Known letters cannot be omitted or reused, and exact mode does not add blanks.
Rack mode treats the entry as a finite supply. A result may use some or all supplied letters, but it cannot use a known letter more often than the rack contains it. Each selected blank may supply one missing letter, and the longest possible result is the number of entered letters plus blanks. If instead you know the positions of unknown letters, use the Missing Letter Word Finder. The two modes remain separate so exact answers are never mixed into an unlabeled broader list.
How results are ordered
Matching is deterministic for a data release; ordering is a build-specific heuristic. The first group favours records with stronger evidence in this build, while the broader option exposes additional source-list membership. A high position is not a universal frequency rank, and inclusion does not certify a word for any branded board game or puzzle ruleset. Each result exposes its source evidence and a match explanation so you can judge it in context.
Questions about the word unscrambler
Can it solve anagrams with multiple words?
No. Both modes return one spelling. Phrase anagrams require searching combinations and choosing where words begin; presenting those combinations as equivalent would change the task and greatly expand the answer space.
Can I use blank tiles?
Yes, in Make shorter words mode. Choose from zero to three blank letters; each blank can substitute for one missing A–Z letter. Exact mode deliberately accepts known letters only. Enter the blank count in its separate field rather than typing a question mark into the rack.
Why is a familiar answer missing?
First check repeated letters, then enable the broader source-list scope. The tool searches a pinned collection rather than claiming to contain every English spelling, and different puzzle makers can use different lists.
