The useful distinction

Homophone, rhyme, homograph, or near-homophone?

These labels answer different questions. Treating them as interchangeable makes a finder look generous while giving the wrong result. This tool uses the narrowest test in the table: full source-recorded sound equality between different spellings.

How the homophone finder decides

    Resolve one exact spelling

    The input is trimmed, lowercased, and accepted only when it contains one to 45 ASCII letters. The lookup then resolves that spelling against the versioned compiled lexicon. We do not silently correct or segment the word, because either operation could change the intended sound.

    Collect every retained pronunciation

    The source can hold a primary reading and alternatives. Each variant is a complete ARPABET sequence of consonants and stress-marked vowels: for example, EY1 T is the retained sequence behind ate. Variants remain separate so one regional or contextual reading is not promoted into a universal claim about the spelling.

    Narrow candidates, then compare the whole sequence

    A compiled rhyme posting supplies a fast candidate set. Initial-sound and stress postings narrow it again. Those indexes are only shortcuts: every surviving candidate must still match the complete phoneme tuple, token for token, including stress. This final check is what prevents ordinary rhymes from leaking into the homophone list.

    Keep evidence attached to each spelling

    Results are grouped by the target's sound sequence and identify the matching variant number. Ordering uses build-relative commonness bands only after membership is decided; frequency can rearrange true matches but can never turn a near-match into an exact one.

These spellings are commonly pronounced alike, but they carry different jobs: to marks direction or an infinitive, too means “also” or an excess, and two is the number 2. A sound match cannot choose the correct spelling; the sentence's grammar and meaning must do that.

there · their · they’re

There points to a place or introduces existence. Their marks possession. They’re contracts “they are.” Pronunciation can explain why these are easily swapped in drafting, while substitution—expanding “they’re” or testing possession—solves the spelling decision. This is a usage example, not a three-spelling lookup: the finder accepts letters only, so search there or their; punctuation-bearing contractions are outside its input syntax.

route · root

Route has well-known pronunciation variation in North American English. Under one retained reading it can share a complete sequence with root; under another it does not. That is why this finder groups results by variant instead of flattening a spelling into one supposedly universal sound.

These can coincide under a retained two-syllable reading, while reduced or one-syllable realizations vary. The evidence panel tells you exactly which source variant collided. It does not adjudicate how a particular person should pronounce either word.

What a match proves—and what it cannot

A positive result is source-specific evidence

It proves that this build retained an identical complete phoneme sequence for two different normalized spellings. The matching sequence and release identity are shown so the decision can be reproduced.

It is not a universal accent judgment

CMUdict is oriented toward North American English. Vowel mergers, rhoticity, stress, reductions, and local lexical choices differ elsewhere—and between speakers in the same place. “Recorded together” is narrower than “always the same.”

A negative result is not proof of impossibility

The source and compiled spelling population are finite. Missing names, contractions, inflections, recent words, specialist terms, and unrecorded variants can all produce an empty report even when a speaker hears a collision.

Meaning remains a separate evidence layer

Homophony is about sound, not semantic relationship. Dynamic definition text remains hidden unless its exact release field passes editorial and source-rights review. The static examples above explain spelling choices without weakening that gate.

What is a homophone?

A homophone is a word that shares a pronunciation with another word but has a different spelling, meaning, or both. This finder uses a conservative source rule: two spellings must share one complete retained phoneme sequence.

Are homophones the same in every accent?

No. Mergers, vowel qualities, reduced forms, and stress can differ by region, speaker, and context. A result means the spellings coincide in at least one retained CMUdict-derived North American pronunciation, not that every speaker says them alike.

Why does a rhyme appear in the rhyme finder but not here?

Rhymes need only a matching stressed vowel and ending under the site's perfect-rhyme comparison. Homophones must match from the first sound to the last, including the retained stress tokens. Cat and hat rhyme but are not homophones.

Does the finder check alternate pronunciations?

Yes. Every pronunciation variant retained in this data build participates. Results are grouped by the target pronunciation, and the page identifies whether a match uses a primary or alternate retained variant.

Why is a familiar word missing?

The compiled spelling list and pronunciation source are finite. Names, new coinages, inflected forms, contractions, and dialect readings can be absent. No result means no matching evidence in this version, not proof that no one pronounces the words alike.

Is an entered word saved or put in the URL?
