Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information The Word Index application processes when you use https://thewordindex.com, what it deliberately excludes from its application logs, and where hosting, network, or advertising providers may process information.

Information We Collect

Information You Provide

You do not need an account to use The Word Index. Search terms, letters, and patterns are sent to our server so it can return results. If you contact us, we receive the information you choose to include in that message.

Search Processing and Application Logs

Searches are processed on The Word Index server against compiled lexical indexes. The application does not send your search term to a third-party dictionary or word-data API.

Our application request logs retain only:

  • An opaque request identifier
  • The HTTP method and code-defined route template
  • The response status and request duration

Application request logs do not include query strings or search terms, actual user-controlled path segments, client IP addresses, user agents, referrers, cookies, or request headers. A request for a particular word is logged using a template such as /word/{word}, not the word itself.

For abuse prevention and rate limiting, the application may inspect a client address or user agent and hold a throttle key temporarily in process memory. That transient processing is separate from the application request log.

The current product-measurement design never copies a search value, result word, saved state, download, URL query, fragment, referrer, IP address, user agent, or persistent identifier into an analytics event.

Hosting and Network Handling

A web request does not remain on your device. It travels through internet, DNS, hosting, and related infrastructure providers before reaching the application. Those providers necessarily process connection information such as your IP address and may process request metadata for delivery, abuse prevention, security, and reliability. Their infrastructure logs and retention are separate from the privacy-safe application request logs described above and are governed by their configurations and policies.

Our network provider may also ask the browser to report qualifying delivery errors through browser Network Error Logging. That provider-level reporting is separate from The Word Index product measurement and is controlled by the active edge configuration.

Cookies and Browser Storage

The site uses limited first-party browser storage for features you control:

  • Content-filter cookie: Stores whether you chose to show filtered terms.
  • Theme setting: Stores your light or dark theme in local storage.
  • Recent searches: The home page can store recent searches in local storage on your device. Finder can similarly store a small set of recent query states. Entries older than 30 days are discarded, clear controls are provided, and their contents are never copied into measurement or application request logs.
  • Finder share state: A Finder state can be stored in the URL fragment. Fragments are not sent in ordinary HTTP requests. Choosing Share deliberately gives that full link to the browser or share target you select.

You can clear these values through the site controls or your browser. Blocking them may reset the related preference but does not prevent basic word lookup.

Third-Party Services

Advertising

Third-party advertising is not enabled in the current site configuration.

Analytics

Product measurement is disabled in the current configuration, and the application does not load a separate third-party analytics service. Hosting providers may still produce aggregate operational metrics or infrastructure records as described above.

Data Retention

Our target maximum for privacy-safe application request and event source logs is 30 days. Sanitized daily or weekly aggregate product reports may be kept for up to 400 days so changes can be compared without keeping user content or identifiers. Search terms are not intentionally retained in application request logs or measurement because those values are excluded when the record is created. Infrastructure, Search Console, and advertising providers may apply their own retention periods; those settings must be reviewed separately.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Object to processing of your data
  • Request restriction of processing

You can clear first-party browser storage in your browser. For other privacy requests, contact hello@thewordindex.com. We may need enough information to understand and verify the request; because the application does not maintain accounts or log search terms, we may not be able to associate an operational record with an individual.

Children's Privacy

The Word Index is a general-audience reference site and is not directed to children under 13. We do not offer user accounts, and the application logging exclusions described above apply to every visitor.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page.
