How this search finds a word today
The available mode checks the pronunciation and spelling clues you provide against this data build (version v1/2026.07-lexical.6). It ranks possible words rather than pretending there is always one certain answer.
What works now
- Enter a word that sounds like the one you want.
- Add starting letters, contained letters, or a syllable count when you remember them.
- Inspect the “why this matched” chips and build-specific ranking tier on each result.
What is being prepared
Reverse-dictionary and rhyme-plus-meaning ranking exist behind the interface, but their source definitions are not approved for public meaning claims in this release. Those modes stay disabled instead of turning unreviewed text into answers.
Data sources and limits
- The current release does not rank or display unreviewed generated definitions. Meaning modes open only when reviewed evidence is available.
- Sound similarity and rhymes use retained CMUdict pronunciation variants, which primarily represent North American English. Words without pronunciation records fall back to spelling distance and have no rhyme set.
- Tier labels are build-specific ranking bands (“common here”), never universal usage claims. The rare toggle widens the band from tiers 1–3 to all five.
- Candidate pools are bounded for speed, so results are the best matches within a capped pool rather than an exhaustive scan; the tool says so whenever a cap was hit.
- The offensive-term display policy is always applied to results on this page.
