Writer's Aids

Two revision utilities: enter a word to see shorter, more common synonyms from this site's local synonym data, each with a definition so you can confirm the sense; or paste a draft to flag cliches, corporate stock phrases, filler, and machine-writing tells from a curated 550-entry list, with a suggested fix for every hit.

Synonym compressor

Trade a long or formal word for a shorter, more common one — utilize becomes use. Each suggestion shows its recorded definition so you can confirm it carries the sense you mean.

One word (letters only), or a short phrase from the curated list.

Cliché & stock-phrase scanner

Paste a draft and every match from the curated phrase list is counted and highlighted by category, with a suggested fix. Scanning happens in your browser: the pasted text is never sent to this site.

Drafts are kept only in this browser (local storage) until you clear them.

    About Writer's Aids & limitations

The synonym compressor reads only this site's local data for the loaded build: synonym and definition records generated editorially for this project, and frequency ranks derived from the pinned FrequencyWords subtitle-corpus artifact. “More common” therefore means a better rank within this build's ranking bands, not a universal claim about English usage. Suggestions that appear in this site's offensive-word policy list are removed before display.

The phrase scanner uses an original curation authored for The Word Index: 550 entries across 5 categories, each with a suggested fix. It flags heavy usage, not errors — a flagged phrase can still be the right choice in context.

    Phrase categories

    • ai tell (119 entries) — Phrases heavily over-represented in machine-generated prose; rewriting them makes text read as deliberate.
    • cliche (168 entries) — Worn figures of speech that readers skim past; prefer literal, specific wording.
    • corporate (114 entries) — Business stock phrases and jargon; prefer plain verbs and concrete nouns.
    • filler (42 entries) — Hedges and throat-clearing that add length without meaning; most can be cut.
    • wordiness (107 entries) — Multi-word constructions (and inflated single words) with a shorter equivalent.

    Bounds

    • Compressor input: a single word or listed phrase, up to 60 characters of letters, spaces, apostrophes, or hyphens. Words absent from this build's lexicon return no synonyms.
    • Synonym coverage is limited to words with generated relation records in this build; many valid words have none, and inflected forms are not expanded.
    • Scanner input: up to 20,000 characters. Matching is exact on letter boundaries (case-insensitive, curly apostrophes normalized); inflections are matched only where listed.
    • Only the compressor sends anything to this site (the single word you enter). Scanned drafts stay in your browser.
