If you write, teach, or make things about words, we will build you a custom, source-bounded dataset or analysis from our compiled lexicon — free, credited, and reproducible. Email a request describing what you need; there is no form, no account, and no tracking.

What we offer

The Word Index runs on one versioned compiled lexicon (about 395,000 spelling records with pronunciation, frequency-tier, and source evidence). We can cut that data any way it actually supports: filtered word lists, letter and sound statistics, anagram or rhyme censuses, or a small bespoke analysis. Every delivery includes the CSV, a methodology note, the data version and build ID it came from, and the limitations that apply — the same standard as our published studies.

Worked examples

A newsletter about spelling oddities

Request: "Which letters most often double, and in which positions?" Delivery: a CSV of doubled-letter counts by letter and word position over the compiled lexicon, a two-paragraph method note, and the caveat that counts describe our pinned source lists rather than all of English.

A teacher building phonics materials

Request: "Short words whose spellings and pronunciations disagree, sorted by how common the word is." Delivery: a filtered list drawn from retained CMUdict pronunciation variants with our build-specific commonness tiers, plus the documented limits of tier evidence.

A video essay on rhyme

Request: "How many indexed words have no rhyme at all?" Delivery: a rhyme-family census over pronunciations covered by our pronunciation source, with the coverage rate stated up front so "no rhyme in the index" is never confused with "no rhyme in English".

Ground rules

  • Everything is computed from our local compiled assets and is reproducible against a named data version.
  • We state limitations with every number and will not present source-membership facts as universal English facts or as validity claims for any commercial word game.
  • We do not fabricate, extrapolate, or backfill data we do not have.
  • Attribution: a link to The Word Index with the data version quoted.

How to request

  2. The question, as concretely as you can put it.
  3. The shape you need (list, table, single figure) and any deadline.
